The Scarlet Stocking Spy is based on the story of a small girl in Philadelphia (1777) who would spy on British ships from her 3rd floor bedroom. Each day she would observe the ships and hang a new line of clothes with each article having its own meaning or code. Her brother who was in Washington's army would come each night to retrieve the code and take back to the general. Daily, the British soldiers would walk under the clothesline and never realize the code was giving away their secrets. These Revolutionary spies were a great aid in giving the Continental Army an advantage. In Mr. Fennewald's class, 8th grade students were given the task of developing their own clothesline code that would reflect something meaningful to them or a part of their lives.
